The gift of a day!

Rene Martin called at 6:15 AM and told us that school was cancelled for the day. I naïvely thought of all the many things I could get done with the extra time. I ordered another classes photos, I’d already started the fire in the Blaze King. Then I called K.C. Thomsen—next door—and he said he’d just finished snow-blowing his drive and I might already be too late to use the snow blower. You have to stay ahead of it he said.

As you can see from this picture The snow is almost exactly as deep as the top of the auger-housing.

Immediately, at 9:30 AM,  I suited up and headed out to snow blow the drive and the sidewalk.

The driveway is not small, but not huge either. Our old driveway is much smaller, but there was no place to put a snow-blower or the car.

In this picture, you can see that the snow is about four inches deeper than the input on the auger. You can see that the snow doesn’t cling to my snow-pants, which have a tight nylon weave unlike my Carhartt Jacket and gloves which get permeated with snow.

I’m definitely going to get out there before the snow gets that high again. It took me about 2.5 hours to run the snow blower. So far the gift of a day has not arrived, but on the bright side, we’re still ahead of the snow, as far as the driveway is concerned.

  1. this is so fun, matt! how awesome to see a post full of pictures of you! who took the photos? good job to the photographer for sure! I can’t BELIEVE how much snow you are getting over there! Its NUTS! We have snow here but it rained some today so its getting sloppy. supposed to snow tomorrow again. i prefer snow to rain at the moment.

    love you!
    Betty

  2. I always liked tons of snow like that so I could call back to the lower 48 and impress everyone with how high the snow was. It’s definitely impressive!
Did you blow the snow back on your neighbor? Because that would be kind of rude. lol
Snow blowing would be fun, but after 2 1/2 hours that would feel like work, for sure. Thanks for posting that. Rhoda

  3. Great stuff Matt.

  4. NEAT PICTURES MATTEO…. I REMEMBER G’PA HINDS TELLING ABOUT THE SNOW GETTING ABOVE THE FENCE POSTS ONCE WHEN HE WAS YOUNG… WE TRIED TO NOT MENTION THAT THE SNOW GOT UP TO THE ROOF ON MOM’S HOME-EC ROOM MOST YEARS. OR THAT THE SOUTH POLE WAS ELEVATION 10,000 FT. 9000 OF IT WAS ICE AND SNOW… AND RECORD HIGH WAS SOMETHING LIKE 15 BELOW… ANY WAY FUN TO PICTURE YOU BLOWING THE SNOW 30 FT TO THE SIDE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT … LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE OF IT GOT ON YOU TOO..

  5. Wow! Selah and I just enjoyed the pics. Not sure how long I would have lasted with snow blowing. Selah was wondering if you even have a lawn mower. We are used to the lawn mower in the summer. She thought it quite neat to routinely have a snow blower. Wish we could enjoy it with you.

btw… how is Holly? Just 2 or 3 weeks more to go if I remember correctly.

    Love you all,

    Dorothy Ann and Selah

    • Holly is very ready for the baby to be born. She has times when she is not comfortaable at all, as she is due on the 12/15, she leaves for Juneau (full-time) on 12/4. The boys are having fun shovelling too. Selah would probably really enjoy the snow up here–most addults however would rather visit in the summer like you did. Later–Matt

  6. Stunning! This makes me thankful for the little snow falls we get here in Oregon… I love snow, and snow days, but this would be something to get used to for sure! I am impressed with the snow, but mostly with your work ethic. Keep it up, cuz!
